More than half of French people think ‘golden boy’ Macron is a bad president, poll finds

The poll, conducted by Odoxa for L’Express, la presse régionale and France Inter, showed that more than half of French people – some 56 per cent – think that Mr Macron is a “bad president”.

However, just under half of those surveyed, some 44 per cent, told Odoxa pollsters that they approved of the 39-year-old centrist’s actions as president, and that he was a “good” head of state.

The poll also found that a large majority of people in France, some 54 per cent, believe that Emmanuel Macron’s right-hand man, conservative Edouard Philippe, is not doing a good as prime minister, compared to 45 per cent who think he is.

The poll also showed than an overwhelming majority of French people – more than 80 per cent – think that Mr Macron’s tax policies favour the wealthy and the successful.

Four out of five respondents said that Mr Macron’s tax policies – including an overhaul of France’s controversial wealth tax – cater mainly to the rich, while 83 per cent said they catered mainly to the heads of large businesses.

In addition, 72 per cent of those surveyed told pollsters that the young centrist’s tax policies would “hurt” the unemployed, while 74 per cent said they would hurt lower- and middle-income earners.

Mr Macron, who has been labelled “the president of the rich” by his critics, sparked a wave of public dissent earlier this month after he announced that he would be making good on his campaign pledge to scale back the infamous wealth tax, a tool for social justice long championed by left-wingers but which critics say has driven scores of millionaires out of France.

The government is scrapping the tax on all but property holdings, while reducing housing subsidies for the poor.

A total of 995 people aged 18 and over were interviewed online between October 18-19.
