Lewis Hamilton explains why he WANTS a close race with Sebastian Vettel at US Grand Prix

Hamilton will start on pole but Vettel will be right next to him in second place and the German will know that if he wants to keep the title race alive, he will have to keep himself inside the top five.

If he fails to do so and the Brit wins the Grand Prix, Hamilton will draw level with the Ferrari driver on four world titles.

But the 32-year-old insists he has no fear of the situation and is looking forward to having Vettel alongside him on the way into Turn One.

“I love pressure,” Hamilton said.

“It’s part of the game. The pressure of being in an intense battle is what excites us as a team and all my mechanics, that’s why we try to operate at our best always in the heat of those moments.”

He added: “On one side, of course you just want to win the race but the real races that we’ve had like Barcelona and Spa have been the best.

“I expect today is going to be a close fight with us and I don’t think there’s going to be a moment where we get to breath. Time will tell.”

And Hamilton is also doing his best to take nothing for granted, despite the fact he is an overwhelming odds-on favourite to wrap up the title eventually.

“It’s a bit like a game of chess,” Hamilton said.

“Obviously right now it’s check but there’s still a long, long way to go.

“There’s still a hundred points available. Sebastian and his team are going to be working as hard as they can, as are we. Who knows? It’s going to go to the wire I still think.

“In the next four races, I think they [Ferrari] are going to give it a great shot and I’m going to do my utmost to try and defend – and not only defend but really maximise and win these races.”
