Super Mario Odyssey release news: Switch update, review countdown and Wii U reveal

The first Super Mario Odyssey reviews have been released ahead of the game’s release on Nintendo Switch.

And so far, it’s made some pretty good reading for fans.

Edge Magazine released the first impressions of the game from a critic, awarding the game 10 out of 10.

The explanation behind this huge score was that while Mario may be getting on a bit, the Nintendo icon is no dinosaur.

The review also praised the different Cappy transformations, the soundtrack and the boss fights.

EDGE isn’t known for dishing out perfect scores very often, having awarded fewer than 20 in its more than 20 year history.

However, it’s not the first Mario game to receive a perfect score, with Mario 64 and both Galaxy games getting 10 out of 10.

Since then, Japanese publication Famitsu posted their own review score for the Super Mario romp, giving the Switch exclusive a score of 39/40.

It may not be a perfect 40/40, but it’s still extremely positive, and is the highest scoring game in the issue.

The upcoming Nintendo Switch exclusive has an October 27 release date, and based on the early reviews, it could be a game of the year contender.

The recent launch of Nintendo Switch system update 4.0.0 also included good news for fans of Super Mario Odyssey.

Among other things, the latest Nintendo Switch update adds eShop pre-orders, video capture and save transfers.

There’s even a Super Mario Odyssey surprise or two hidden within the profile menu.

With the release of Super Mario Odyssey just a few weeks away, video capture is a particularly exciting addition.

It’s currently not available in all Nintendo Switch games, just first party exclusives like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, ARMS, Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Express Online has contacted Nintendo to find out if it will be available in Super Mario Odyssey when its October 27 release date rolls around.

As Eurogamer points out, limited video capture support – and the fact that it only works with updated versions of the aforementioned releases – suggests that developers have to manually add the feature.

Another useful feature is the ability to pre-order games from the Nintendo eShop.

While things are winding down for the Wii U console as Nintendo move their attentions to the Switch, players are still getting up to mischief.

The most recent would be a fresh mod for beloved Wii U game, Super Smash Bros.

Having recently seen new images released for upcoming Switch title, Super Mario Odyssey, one in particular stuck out to fans.

That would be the one featuring Mario running around a beach wearing just his swimming shorts and hat.

This sparked some much-needed debate around the character, as well as new stream of memes on the subject.

But some fans have taken it one step further by actually building a new mod for the occasion.

The new skin mod mimicking the Super Mario Odyssey trailer is now available unofficially for Super Smash Bros. on Wii U.

The “Shirtless Mario!” mod from SmashingRenders puts Mario in his beach-ready gear and is available to download now.

The skin has been confirmed to work in both the game’s UI and during matches, with a metal version available for those instances as well.
