Stoke vs Bournemouth: Mark Hughes blasts club boards for sacking managers too quickly

Craig Shakespeare at Leicester this week joined Frank De Boer at Crystal Palace as the second top-flight manager to lose his job this season, while the vultures are circling around Everton’s Ronald Koeman.

After a 7-2 mauling at Manchester City which left the Potters fourth from bottom, Stoke manager Hughes – in charge since May 2013 and the fourth longest-serving boss at a current Premier League club – might have been under pressure elsewhere.

But his position appears safe under long-serving chairman Peter Coates and he reckons other Premier League clubs should take notice of the loyalty afforded him.

“Sometimes when clubs have new ownerships they can maybe be a little bit more emotional,” said Hughes, 53.

“People can make mistakes and press buttons to get rid of good people who have proved themselves.

“They bow to the immediate thinking rather than actually looking at the quality of their people and backing them.

“We have people here that have been in game for a long time.

“They understand football isn’t a straight line in terms of success and failure – there’s ups and downs, peaks and troughs, you have to navigate your way through those.”

Stoke will look to bounce back from their defeat at 7-2 against a Bournemouth side where manager Eddie Howe is seeking a helping glove from boxing champ George Groves to make them pack a punch at Stoke.

Bournemouth stayed in the same hotel as Groves before last weekend’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham at Wembley and on the eve of the Londoner’s knockout win over Jamie Cox.

Howe hopes the chance meeting with Groves will inspire his players drag themselves away from second from bottom in the table.

Howe said: “I met George Groves and was able to pick his brains about his preparations on the day before a fight and the day of a fight.”

Following his encounter with Groves, Howe took his players for a training session with local fighter and Bournemouth fan Chris Billam-Smith ahead of the fixture.

Howe said: “The lads found it really hard doing a little sparring for a short time and I could see the sweat suddenly pouring from them.”
