Lyon won the game 2-1 but Midway through the second half Ashley Williams collided with Lyon’s goalkeeper, with the visitors 1-0 up.
Lyon fans took exception to Williams’ actions – Lyon keeper Anthony Lopes was barged off the field when catching a ball – and challenged the Toffees’ centre-back.
And within seconds both sets of players were throwing fists at each other.
The brawl moved towards the advertising hoardings, where a number of Everton fans reached out to get involved.
A fan holding a child appeared to aim a punch at Lyon players.

Williams was eventually dragged away by Everton staff as tensions fizzled out.
The Wales international was booked along with Lyon’s Bertrand Traore.
And, as this footage shows, UEFA may want to take a closer look.
Speaking after the game on BT Sport Williams said: “It’s what happens. It’s football. It is what it is.”
Asked again about the fight between Everton and Lyon players, he said: “It’s just what happens. It’s high emotion. We want to win the game, they want to win the game. It’s stuff that happens. It was just one of those times.
“You always do (feel pressure). The pressure you put on yourselves is bigger than anything from outside.
“We want to show fight but for ourselves more than anything, and for the club and the fans especially at home.
“I’m disappointed we didn’t get a result tonight because I thought we had a good attitude the way we went about it. Very disappointing.
“We had a lot of chances, more than them. Really disappointing when we got to 1-1 to concede another goal so quickly.”
As luck would have it, moments after the fight it was Williams who equalised for Everton on a sodden night on Merseyside.
But the Toffees’ joy was short-lived, as Traore then netted for the visitors to restore their lead.
