Jane Fonda opens up on FEUD with ‘prickly’ Katharine Hepburn: ‘She was so competitive’

Fonda, 79, was appearing on The Graham Norton Show when she recalled her interesting dynamic with Hollywood icon Hepburn, who died in 2003 at the age of 96.

The film was directed by her father, Henry Fonda, in the later stages of his life – and it seems it took a while for the two female stars to see eye-to-eye.

“Katharine was very prickly and told me outright that she didn’t like me much,” Fonda said.

“I did the film for him because he was dying but she taught me the most and I gained her respect for doing my own stunt.

“But then when I rang to congratulate her on receiving an Oscar for the film she said, ‘You’ll never catch me now.’

“She had won three Oscars and I had won two – she was so competitive.”

Fonda also spoke about her friend Robert Redford, with whom she’s promoting Our Souls At Night – reuniting them 50 years after Barefoot In The Park.

“It is like bookends to our careers,”  she said.

“I’m not stopping [acting]. He says he is and he should because he is too old!”

Fonda has also recently spoken about the Harvey Weinstein scandal, saying she heard rumours about his shocking conduct a year ago.

The Graham Norton Show airs tonight at 10:35pm on BBC One.
