American lawyer and former diplomat John Bolton has served in several Republican administrations.
He believes that “we are down to two choices” amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
Speaking on Twitter, he said: “We’re down to two choices with North Korea: either eliminate the regime or eliminate the nuclear weapons.”
The former ambassador has been named as a possible replacement for US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and was seen outside the White House on Wednesday.
Mr Bolton is known for his bellicose rhetoric and suggested Brexiteers should “divide and conquer” alliances in Europe as a way to defeat the “theologians of Brussels” during exit talks.

It is not the first time that he has advocated Kim Jong-Un’s removal.
Speaking to Fox News in September, he said: “I think the only diplomatic option left is to end the regime in North Korea by effectively having the South take it over.
“Anyone who thinks more diplomacy, with North Korea, or sanctions, whether against North Korea or China is just giving North Korea more time to increase its nuclear arsenal, increase its ballistic missile capability, increase the accuracy of its guidance systems and put the US, South Korea and Japan in more jeopardy.
“We have fooled around with North Korea for 25 years and fooling around is just going to make things worse.”
The comments come following months of tensions with North Korea following tests of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) which were first tested in July.
Last month, the hermit kingdom tested a missile capable of reaching continental US.
President Trump met with top defence officials on Tuesday to discuss his options.
In a statement, the White House said: “This morning President Donald Trump met with members of his national security team to receive a briefing from Secretary of Defence James Mattis and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Dunford.
“The briefing and discussion focused on a range of options to respond to any form of North Korean aggression or, if necessary, to prevent North Korea from threatening the United States and its allies with nuclear weapons.”
After the meeting, the US flew two supersonic bombers over the Korean peninsula.
Donald Trump’s North Korea meeting was held in the situation room in the White House where US Presidents traditionally hold “war councils” at times of conflict.
The most senior US general recently told the American army to “stand ready” for war with North Korea.
