German state bans migrants from moving to city after Merkel U-turns on policy

The government of Lower Saxony, in northwest Germany, has claime the imposed immigration restrictions on migrants in Salzgitter is due to the city’s “exceptionally high immigration” and “for reasons of integration”.

The mandate stated: “This is an exceptional measure aimed at preventing the social and societal exclusion of immigrant refugees.”

Germany has struggled to absorb more than a million migrants from the Middle East and Africa who have arrived in the country over the last few years.

Chancellor Angela Merkel has come under fire for her lenient migrant polices which have seen millions of migrants arrive in the country.

Germany now has the challenge to integrate migrants into society over the long term.

Salzgitter is south of Hanover and has a population of 106,000 people and is made up of 31 boroughs with several small towns and villages.

The decree was issued by the state’s ministry of the interior on Wednesday.

The decree orders migration offices in Lower Saxony to include a mandatory supplement to the resident permits of recognised migrants that prevents immigration to Salzgitter.

Lower Saxony has said it would use £9million for an integration fund that will be used particularly for those states where there has been the most migration this year.

According to the German Magazine, Focus Online, there are two other cities in Lower Saxony that are sick of the high levels of immigration and want to see a similar ban introduced.

Germany is expected to see a population boom by 2035 because of the record number of migrant arrivals as well as a growing birth rate.
