We are always unable to resist serial killer films and the way their twisted minds work, even if it sometimes makes us feel a little ill or scared to sleep with the light off…
Inspired by this Friday’s release of upcoming Scandi-thriller The Snowman, based on the best selling novel by Jo Nesbo and starring Michael Fassbender, we’re taking a look at the very worst ever serial killers in film.
George Harvey – The Lovely Bones
Possibly one of the most despicable characters in film and book, Stanley Tucci portrays George Harvey, the seemingly innocent next door neighbour who lures young girls away, rapes them, then eventually murders his prey.
Uncomfortable with the idea of his role, Stanley Tucci asked the costume department to change his appearance as much as possible, including contact lenses, dying his body hair and a fat suit.
Jigsaw – Saw films
A serial killer with a twist – he forces his victims to choose their fate. The mastermind behind a series that has stretched to 8 movies, Jigsaw obviously still hasn’t had his fill.

Punishing those he feels have ‘sinned’ in life using nightmareish contraptions and ‘tests’, the extremely unfortunate victims are faced with items such as the ‘reverse bear trap’ and ‘razor box’.
John Doe – Se7en
Hell bent on shaming those who indulge in the seven deadly sins, mystery murderer known as John Doe leads detectives on a cat-and-mouse chase through gluttony, sloth, lust, pride, wrath, envy and greed.
His disgusting tactics include (slight spoilers) the removal a pound of flesh and fatal blood letting of an attorney (greed) and even overfeeding an obese man to death by tube (gluttony).
Justine – Raw
Following a particularly disgusting hazing ritual at school, involving eating a raw rabbit’s kidney, a once vegetarian young girl finds herself with an unbidden taste for flesh.
This film’s release famously caused cinema goers to actually be SICK and FAINT during the showing as the young girl goes on a rather graphic murderous cannibalistic rampage.
The Snowman Killer – The Snowman
Based on the bestselling novel by Jo Nesbo, The Snowman murderer is an unknown beast targeting a particular type of woman and leaving detectives grizzly clues such as just their head, or a scattering of bodyparts.
Becoming more and more personal, alcoholic detective Harry Hole (Fassbender) is against the clock to stop this sadistic murderer.
Strangers – The Strangers
The story of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, The Strangers is an unapologetic torturous terror.
Featuring mysterious torturers who have no excuse for why they’re here apart from “you were home”, this is guaranteed to give you chills and make you feel extremely uncomfortable.
The Snowman is out in UK cinemas on Friday, October 13
