Nintendo Switch games shock as Mario plays catch up with Final Fantasy 7 Remake

For gamers of a certain age, the Final Fantasy 7 Remake announcement was a very big deal.

With many of the more mature gaming audiences having experienced, or at least seen the original FF7 on PS1, it was special to see such a glitzy reveal during E3 2015.

And there was no need to tease the story, as most people will still remember Cloud’s adventures.

One of the more disappointing aspects of the teaser trailer was that the game was only confirmed for PS4.

But that doesn’t seem to have hurt it in the hype stakes, even against big rivals like Nintendo Switch games, Super Mario Odyssey.

The latest 3D adventure from the now ex-plumber is just round the corner and yet it can’t topple a title that has yet to receive a release date.

That’s according to the Japanese gaming mag Famitsu, whose latest ranking of the most highly anticipated upcoming games as voted by their readers still puts FF7 top.

The top five includes:

  • [PS4] Final Fantasy VII Remake – 716 votes
  • [PS4] Monster Hunter World – 629 votes
  • [NSW] Super Mario Odyssey – 490 votes
  • [PS4] Kingdom Hearts III – 408 votes
  • [3DS] Pokemon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon – 373 votes

While we still don’t have a clear launch window for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, there is hope that the situation could change later this year.

It had been hoped that the first episode in the revival of the PS1 classic could come out this year – as it’s Final Fantasy’s 30th anniversary.

This year is also the 20th birthday for Final Fantasy 7, with the game first coming out in Japan on January 31 1997.

However, this year is fast drawing to a close with new information on the Final Fantasy 7 Remake drying up.

It seems unlikely that will see the game arrive in 2017, however, big news could be on the horizon regarding a launch window.

A recent interview with Final Fantasy VII Remake and Kingdom Hearts III Director Tetsuya Nomura teased that there could be some big announcements coming our way.

Translations from the Famitsu interview suggests that Nomura was encouraging fans to wait for  more news on his next projects.

And it’s fair to say that there are plenty of events in the near future where we could see something announced on the subject FF7.

The PlayStation Experience seems like the most obvious choice for a big reveal, although there are others.

Sony recently announced that Paris Games Week would also include some cracking announcements, which is scheduled for later this month.
