Draconid Meteor Shower 2017 live steam: How to watch the Draconids online TONIGHT

How to watch the Draconid Meteor Shower 2017 online

The Earth will be peppered by shooting stars tonight when the Draconid Meteor Shower concludes its annual two-day appearance.

A near full moon is expected to make it more difficult to spot the this year, but robotic telescope service Slooh will host a live stream for those who cannot view the shower in person.

Slooh will use several low light cameras installed at their observatory at the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands, as well as using other global feed partners.

You need sign up as a member to watch the live stream, which will air on Slooh.com this evening.

Though the Draconids were visible yesterday, experts predict that they will be brighter and more frequent tonight.

How to watch the Draconids in person

Stargazers who prefer to watch meteor showers in the night’s sky to on a screen should travel to a rural location.

The Draconids can be challenging to see even in on a clear night, so it is better to avoid light pollution as much as possible.

Unusually for a meteor shower, the Draconids are best seen in the evening, rather than before the dawn.

Astronomy website Earthsky.org said: “Remember – no matter where you are on Earth – the radiant for this meteor shower is highest up in the evening.”

The Northern Hemisphere tends to get the best views of the Draconids, so those in Europe, North American and northern Asia are in for a treat.

Earthsky.org said it is possible to see the meteor shower in the Southern Hemisphere but the radiant point does not raise high enough above the horizon to deliver the best views.

What are the Draconids?

The Draconids are meteors created when the Earth moves through the debris left by comet 21P Giacobini-Zinner.

The shower is named after the Draco constellation because they radiate from the head of The Dragon.

Stargazers also have the Orionid Meteor Shower to look forward to this month.

The spectacle is visible between October 2 and November 7, but usually peaks on October 20 and 21.
