Las Vegas shooter’s meticulous planning – how Stephen Paddock ordered suite upgrade

Details of his stay on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel suggest the worst mass shooting in modern US history was meticulously planned to a chilling degree.

Paddock’s movements also expose what security sources have described as serious lapses in hotel security.

The 64-year-old mounted a camera in his door’s peephole and two in the hallway – including one on a room service trolley – that were wired to a device that allowed him to monitor any activity on the landing outside room 32135.

When police finally stormed the room they found Paddock’s body along with 23 guns, ammunition stacked in piles, suitcases and duffel bags that he used to conceal assault rifles, bullets strewn on the ground and wiring along the skirting boards.

They also found 12 bump stocks, a cheap and legal device that converts a semi-automatic rifle into one that mimics the fire of a fully automatic weapon.

Clarke County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said: “It was pre-planned extensively and I’m pretty sure that he evaluated everything that he did.”

According to security sources, Paddock kept the “do not disturb” sign on the door and no one entered the room for three days.

The source said: “There were a number of missed opportunities by the hotel.

“These things in isolation don’t seem much but when you put them all together, they raise serious suspicions.”

CCTV showed Paddock stayed at the Mandalay Bay three times recently, raising the possibility of months of planning.

He checked in alone last Thursday and returned to reception the next morning to ask for a corner room.

It gave him a view of the Route 91 Harvest country festival 450 metres away where he would kill 59 people and injure more than 520 in a 10-minute shooting spree.
