Harry Kane Uncovered: Tottenham star won’t follow in Gareth Bale’s footsteps anytime soon

But Spurs fans have no need to panic – the Tottenham striker is going absolutely nowhere… for now.

The speculation of a £177million bid from Real Madrid is largely irrelevant – there is no way that Tottenham are going to sell just as they move into their brand new stadium.

That said, the new speculation around yesterday got me thinking. I remembered standing in the mixed zone in November 2012 talking to Gareth Bale after he had captained the side against Lazio.

Leading the teams out in one of the greatest arenas in European football must have whetted his appetite to experience life outside the Premier League.

“I have always said I am not afraid to go abroad,” Bale had said. “If the time comes and a team that is right comes in for me, then I will look at it seriously.”

The time was the following summer; the team was Real Madrid. Few people doubt that Kane will lead Tottenham into their new stadium and beyond – his current deal ties him up until 2022. But I just wondered whether, strictly long term, playing in La Liga was a secret ambition.

I seized the moment in England’s pre-match press conference yesterday and asked him.

“Barely a day goes by without some story about how much so-and-so are going to pay for you and today is no different,” I ventured.

“Gareth Bale made it clear fairly early on in his life that at some stage of his career he wanted to go and play abroad. Obviously not now, but at some point is that something that interests you?”

There was an immediate objection from the FA press officer, concerned about Kane being asked to talk about club business while on international duty.

But I explained: “I ask the question in terms of your development as a player, because you are seen as a very ‘English’ centre-forward.”

“I would never say no,” Kane seemed happy to reply. “I would never say yes. I think in football, you don’t know and you never rule out anything. It is not something that I definitely want to do but it could happen. You just never know.

“Like you said, at the moment, I am very happy where I am here – that is all that matters. We will see what happens, but for now that is all I am focusing on.”

I prompted again: “So you are not worried about being seem purely as an ‘English’-style striker?”

“No,” he said simply.

As soundbites go, “I would never say no” to a move to Spain is always going to get traction when uttered by somebody like Kane. Certainly there were deep concerns within the FA press corps.

They were worried the story would be spun. That Kane’s comments would be taken out of context.

But this is the 21st century and supporters, I feel, are more media-savvy than that.

Which is why the Daily Express presents to Spurs fans the full blow-by-blow account behind the latest headlines so that they can make up their own minds.

My personal view? Kane is going nowhere.
