Bali volcano latest: Mount Agung eruption warning still at LEVEL 4 as fears grow

Fears the island’s highest volcano Mount Agung is on the brink of erupting has forced more than 140,000 people to evacuate as authorities warn it could erupt at any time.

Holidaymakers are avoiding the island after scientists issued the highest alert level for the volcano, which killed more than 1,000 people when it last erupted in 1963.

Rising more than 3,000 meters (yards), Mount Agung is the island’s highest and most sacred volcano, home to the Pura Besakih temple complex that narrowly escaped the previous eruption.

Bali is better prepared this time, imposing a 12-km (7-mile) exclusion zone around the volcano and stocking up on food and emergency supplies at temporary shelters.

Around 140,000 locals were forced to flee the area when officials warned an eruption was imminent.

But many evacuees who live just outside the “red zone” expressed concerns about returning home.

The Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation raised the volcano alert to 4, meaning an eruption could happen at any time.

Balinese locals fled the danger zone, which stretches 7.5 miles around the volcano, as white steam poured from Mount Agung last week.

Seismologists have not seen activity at this rate since the last eruption from Agung in 1963.

Mount Agung, which is the largest volcano in Bali, has not erupted since 1963, when two major eruptions killed some 1,100 people and injured 300 more.

The volcano is part of the so-called Ring of Fire, a circle of volcanoes that surrounds Indonesia.
