WATCH: Donald Trump tosses paper towels into crowd of Puerto Rico hurricane survivors

The US President visited the US territory for the first time since it was battered by Hurricane Maria. 

downplayed the severity of the hurricane during his visit as he claimed Puerto Rico should be proud only 16 people died.

The President was also filmed tossing out paper towels to a crowd of people as he visited locals in the neighbourhood of Gauynabo on Tuesday. 

Mr Trump stood before residents at a church and distributed food before he began hurling paper towels into the crowd. 

Speaking about the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria, Mr Trump compared the catastrophe to that of Hurricane Katrina.

He said: “Every death is a horror, but if you look at a real catastrophe like Katrina, and you look at the tremendous hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people that died and you look at what happened here with a story that was just totally overpowering.

“Sixteen people certified. Sixteen people versus in the thousands.”

“You can be very proud of all of your people and all our people working together. Sixteen versus literally thousands of people. You can be very proud. 

“Everyone around this table and everybody watching can really be very proud of what’s been taking place in Puerto Rico.”

The US President also made a comment on how much the devastation caused by the hurricane would cost.

He said: “I hate to tell you, Puerto Rico, but you are throwing our budget out of whack. We spent a lot of money on Puerto Rico and that’s fine, we saved a lot of lives.”

Puerto Ricans are still struggling a fortnight after they were hit by the worst hurricane in 90 years. 

The death count from Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico has now been raised from 16 to 34.

Around 3.4 million people live on the US territory which was already in recession before the hurricane hit the island. 

The storm wiped out the power grid and has left less than half of the residents without running water.

President Trump was praised for his handling of Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Hurricane Irma in Florida and the Caribbean, but was caught out by the severity of Hurricane Maria.
