Pyongyang has already ratcheted up fears of World War 3 breaking with a series of missile launches and nuclear tests in recent months.
And, with the peninsula marking its 10-day harvest festival Chuseok this week, officials in the South are concerned another blast could be on the way.
North Korea is known to use anniversaries and public holidays to launch missile tests.
A military source told the Yonhap news agency: “Since North Korea can carry out provocations at any time, we are constantly on alert and ready to respond immediately.
“We are closely monitoring any movement in the North’s military, under the assumption that the North can destabilise the conditions on the Korean Peninsula with a major provocation even during Chuseok, which is one of our biggest traditional holidays.”

There is particular concern Kim could fire a new weapon on October 10, marking the foundation of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea.
The warnings were made as the US said it was looking at trying to open dialogue with North Korea again following a tense few weeks.
Pyongyang has accused US President Donald Trump of declaring war by threatening Kim with destruction.
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson also held top-level talks in China today, hoping to tighten an economic squeeze on there hermit kingdom.
Washington sees China as critical to averting a military confrontation with the North, which is fast advancing toward its goal of developing a nuclear-tipped missile capable of reaching the US.
Officials say Beijing appears increasingly willing to cut ties to North Korea’s economy by adopting UN sanctions, despite accounting for some 90 percent of its neighbour’s foreign trade.
Meanwhile, Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon has claimed the UK military is ready should war break out.
US warships have also been practicing shooting down missiles in drills off Scotland’s west coast, he said.
Sir Michael said: “North Korean tests have shown the danger of rogue states developing longer range missiles.
“By hosting this cutting-edge exercise, Britain is at the forefront of developing a more effective response to this growing threat.
“Today the nuclear dangers are intensifying from a reckless North Korea and increasingly assertive Russia.
“UK weapons remain the only credible way to deter the most extreme dangers, reminding any aggressor the benefits of an attack would be vastly outweighed by the consequences.”
