World War 3 threat: Russia plots to build ‘drone swarms’ capable of making decisions

The drones will be able to take off, reach a designated location and then come to a decision on how to cope with the task they have been given entirely on their own.

Russian state media says the drones are being produced by state owned radio-electronic technology group KRET, a company that specialises in aircraft and electronic warfare.

Vladimir Mikheyev, an advisor to the first deputy CEO of the group said: “We are gradually moving towards remote controlled aviation.”

“Within the coming five years a swarm of intellectual drones will be created.

“They will be able to make decisions on their own, conduct combat operations and reconnaissance and so on and so forth.”

KRET has already created small devices that can target weapons carried by mini drones.

The company announced in June at an air show in Moscow that they had been developing the new technology.

At the time Mr Mikheyev admitted there would be some issues with the thinking drones.

He said: “Failures do happen sometimes – drones may become stalled over some area, they may have problems with identifying targets or they may refuse to perform combat missions or send in wrong reports.”

Russia is attempting to make its mark in the realm of artificial intelligence and is revamping its military. Putin himself has vowed to spend trillions of rubles on modernising its forces.

Russia expects to have several hundred military drones in operation by 2025.

The country’s Military Industrial Committee has set a target of making 30 percent of its military equipment robotic by 2025.

While its thought that China and the US are also marching ahead in a race to become an AI superpower.

During China’s latest five-year-plan, the government announced a programme called Artificial Intelligence 2.0 which will develop AI for commercial and military use. It’s thought that billions of yuan has been pumped into the initiative.
