The music icon’s latest record comes 15 years after her last studio set, Up!, which hit the top spot in the US and the Top 5 in the UK back in 2004.
Preceded by the singles Life’s About To Get Good and Swingin’ with My Eyes Closed, it has much importance for Twain, after her voice was left damaged by a battle with Lyme disease.
The LA Times argued that her pipes still aren’t quite up to scratch; praising the production and songwriting on offer but adding: “The problem is Twain’s singing.
The critic said the uptempo songs sound “flat and robotic”, and lacking in “exuberance”.
The Daily Mail issued three stars out of five, saying: “Give Twain a fistful of lemons and she’ll rustle up a very decent glass of lemonade.

“Had she decided instead to mix a whisky sour, Now could have been truly compelling rather than merely refreshing.”
Toronto Sun had a lot of praise for the “feminine strength and optimism” but also criticised her voice, saying some tracks “are so over processed and tweaked in the studio that it’s distracting”.
However, they concluded positively: “Twain has persevered through a lot of personal hardships and this album’s survival message shows she’s not going let anything stop her.”
Elsewhere, Newsday gave an enthusiastic three-and-a-half stars out of four, beaming: “Throughout Now, Twain sounds more worldly, more nuanced, like she’s living from this moment on.”
Now’s collaborators include Ron Aniello, Jake Gosling, Jacquire King and Matthew Koma.
Twain herself has a writing credit on all of the songs included.
Now is out tomorrow, on September 29.
