One person is believed to have been killed in the shooting.
Police are searching for an “active shooter”.
Nearby offices and buildings have been evacuated near Gatehouse Road, in Falls Church.
The office block contains a nursery and children were reportedly inside the building when the shooting started.
There were no reports of injured children, according to police.
An area has been organised as a meeting point for anxious parents and children.
