Ashes 2017/18: Kevin Pietersen leads criticism of weak England squad

Pietersen has constantly sniped at Andrew Strauss and former skipper Alastair Cook in particular ever since he was thrown out of the squad after a series of rows with team-mates.

And he took to Twitter last night to say: “I have a comment on England’s Ashes squad – it’s horrendous! They may as well not go!

“I actually really feel sorry for Root, Cook, Anderson and Broad!”

He was not alone in fearing for the tourists with BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew branding them: “The weakest party I have seen sent Down Under from these shores.”

He added: “At best, the batting is a lucky dip. At worst, it is a return to players who have shown themselves to be proven failures.”

Batsman James Vince, whose call-up has been questioned by many critics revealed even he was taken aback by his inclusion after a mediocre summer with the red ball for Hampshire.

The 26-year-old, who has amassed 596 runs at a moderate 33.11 in this year’s County Championship, said: “To play for England last summer was special but to be called up for an Ashes tour is probably the best thing that can happen.

“I guess it has come from nowhere really. I had my winter planned out with my T20 stuff and I hadn’t really thought about the possibility of a call-up.

“My white-ball form has been really good and, if anything, I’d have said I was closer to being picked in white-ball stuff so it did come as a surprise.

“My plans in the last 24 hours have changed a huge amount. I can’t wait to get out there and get stuck in and hopefully have a good tour.”

Gary Ballance, another controversial choice, said: “I’ll work as hard as I can to prove the selectors right.

I was a bit surprised, although I had a feeling there was a decent chance.

“But it’s always good news to get the phone call because I’ve certainly been on the end of some bad news.

“It will be a massive challenge, probably one of the biggest I will face as a cricketer. I love a challenge and can’t wait.”
