‘Pregnant woman kidnapped and forced to drink bleach in suspected revenge attack’

French daily Ouest France reported the victim, whose age and identity remain unknown but who is said to be from the north-western French town of Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande, was waiting for a bus on September 15 when she was grabbed by “several people” and forced into a car.

She was then taken to an unknown location where she was held against her will and forced to drink bleach during the horrific ordeal.

Her abductors then dumped her near a lake, where she was found by passers-by. Her rescuers did their best to deliver first aid before rushing her to a nearby hospital for treatment.

A spokesman for the Rennes prosecutor’s office said in a statement that the young woman, who is several months pregnant, was expected to make a full recovery.

“The victim and her unborn child are out of danger,” the spokesman said, adding that police had launched an investigation into the attack and that two arrests had been made.

The suspects, two females in their twenties, both know the victim, and have been charged with “kidnapping and illegal confinement, administering a harmful substance, and aggravated assault”. They have since been released and placed under judicial control.

The two women deny being behind the revenge attack.

One of the two women is the victim’s boyfriend’s jilted lover, police said, leading them to believe that the attack was an act of revenge orchestrated by a “ferociously jealous” ex-girlfriend.

The suspect, police believe, refused to accept that her relationship was over, and planned the attack shortly after discovering that her ex-boyfriend was expecting a baby with another woman.

The aim was clearly to harm the unborn child, police said.

Police are looking for two more suspects in connection with the attack, the prosecutor added, without elaborating.
