Melania Trump, 47, greeted Justin Trudeau, 45, ahead on the Invictus Games in Toronto, Canada, this weekend.
Notably, this is Melania’s first official trip without her husband Donald Trump, who is usually by the Slovenian, former-model’s side.
Body language expert Judi James gives her view on what the pair’s actions shows about their relationship with one another.
Diplomatically, the countries have an interesting relationship. Although they are geographical neighbours, the leaders have different ideologies.
However, Trump has made efforts to demonstrate friendliness to Trudeau in recent times, and tweeted on July 1: “Happy Canada Day to all of the great people of Canada and to your Prime Minister and my new found friend @JustinTrudeau.”

And Judi believes this friendly relationship extends to Donald’s wife and Prime Minister Trudeau.
She claims Justin Trudeau has a gentlemanly attitude to the First Lady of the US, steering her through the greeting process like a dance, in an attempt to calm her perceived nerves.
She said: “Cheek-kissing can be a logistic nightmare for any guest and Melania’s First Lady body language has never defined her as particularly confident at high-profile events.
“Trudeau got around both these problems with his use of announcement gestures, subtly steering the First Lady via leading rituals like Anton Du Beke steers his celebrities around the dance floor in Strictly.
“As Melania approaches he throws out his arms in an empty embrace gesture with both hands cupped upward to show where she should place her arms to dock in for the kiss. This gesture with a slight hand shrug also shows the world that these two have met before and consider themselves old friends.”
This means that Melania has to do very little in the exchange, and is able to take her cues from Justin.
Judi added: “All Melania has to do is hold onto his upper arm while he steers her into a perfect two-cheek kiss with no dithering or clashing of noses. His body language confidence is contagious as we see Melania smiling which is a rare enough event in public.
“Add in a daddy man-splay of a protective two hands on the hips as Melania chats to his kids and you can see how Justin deserves the title of current best world leader body language performer. He grew up in a political family and it shows.”
Justin used similar body language prowess when he met Melania’s husband Donald Trump.
Judi said: “Trudeau disarmed Trump at their first meeting by getting in too close to fall victim to Trump’s notorious power shake or shake-and-yank combos that were diminishing the status of other world leaders on their first visits to the White House.
“His canny arm-pat on the president’s bicep suggested Trudeau was the one in control and he uses a similar technique with Melania here, but to achieve a completely different end result.
“Unlike many UK politicians and business people Trudeau is a very slick operator when it comes to his greeting rituals and both his handshake with Trump and now his more affectionate greeting with his wife are a master class in getting it right.”
