Iran nuclear crisis: France orders Tehran to stop missile tests

France said it was extremely “concerned” by Iran’s ballistic missile test and urged UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to launch an investigation into the controversial launch.

French foreign ministry spokeswoman Agnès Romatet-Espagne said in a statement: “France asks Iran to cease all destabilising activity in the region.

“France has asked Mr Guterres to carry out a full report on the launch …. and will consider with its partners, notably European, the means to obtain from Iran the cessation of its destabilising ballistic activities.”

Mrs Romatet-Espagne added Iran was in “clear violation” of UN resolution 2231 and urged Iran to “respect” the terms laid out in the 2015 nuclear deal.

Most UN sanctions against Iran were lifted 18 months ago under a landmark deal Iran made with France, Britain, Germany, Russia, China, and the United States to curb its nuclear and ballistic programmes.

Mr Guterres reports to the UN Security Council every six months on the implementation of the remaining sanctions and restrictions.

Iran, however, is still subject to an arms embargo and other restrictions, which are not technically part of the nuclear agreement.

Iran on Saturday said it had successfully tested a new ballistic missile with a range of 2,000 km (1,200 miles) and would keep developing its arsenal despite mounting US pressure to halt all nuclear enrichment activities.

Iran added the missile could carry “several” warheads, but did not say when or where the missile was tested.

The US has imposed unilateral sanctions on Iran on grounds that its missile tests violate a UN resolution – resolution 2231 – which calls on Tehran not to undertake activities related to missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons. Iran, however, denies violating the resolution.

US president Donald Trump said on Twitter after Iran confirmed the test: “Iran just test-fired a ballistic missile capable of reaching Israel. They are also working with North Korea. Not much of an agreement we have!”
