Laver Cup 2017: Roger Federer beats Nick Kyrgios to earn 15-9 win for Team Europe

Roger Federer went into his match with Nick Kyrgios on day three knowing a win would seal victory for Team Europe in the inaugural Laver Cup.

And the Swiss did not disappoint, holding his metal to see off Kyrgios in three sets and guide Europe to the title with a score of 15-9.

The 36-year-old dropped the first set to Kyrgios 6-4 but battled back to win the second 7-6 to set up a tense finale.

The final set went to a tiebreaker and the eight-time Wimbledon champion used all his experience to clinch the win against his Australian opponent 11-9.

Speaking court-side, Federer said: “It’s been an amazing and fun week and I’m just so proud the event worked as well as it did.

“The camaraderie as you saw was amazing also and only time will tell how big the Laver Cup will become.

“The first one is officially over and I can’t wait to get my hands on the trophy.”

Had Kyrgios won, it would have taken the event to a doubles decider and Federer admitted had it gone that way he would have back Team World.

“They made us work so incredibly hard and I can only congratulate them,” the Swiss added.

“They could have been in, in the final doubles, they were maybe the better doubles team this week.

“They had the better chance and the better moves but in the end Team Europe got it done so I am very happy.”
