And the Red Devils made sure they kept up with their cross-town rivals with a narrow victory at St Mary’s.
It only took United’s leading goalscorer Lukaku to make it eight goals for the season with a strike on 20 minutes.
Ashley Young crossed the ball from the left flank to find the Belgian powerhouse in the box, who poked home his rebound after Fraiser Forster saved his initial header.
United held on thanks to a number of saves from goalkeeper David De Gea, but manager Jose Mourinho failed to see out the whole 90 minutes.
