Everton news: Ronald Koeman insists he can handle the pressure after tough start

Koeman needs a win at home against Bournemouth in the Premier League after a poor start that has left his side in the relegation zone.

Despite a summer spend of more than £140m, Everton have scored just twice in their opening five league games, with both goals from Wayne Rooney, while looking desperately vulnerable at the back.

But for Koeman, his current woes are nothing compared to what he faced during a turbulent five-month spell in charge of Valencia a decade ago.

The Dutchman managed to win the Copa Del Rey after being appointed in November 2007 but then saw the club plummet towards relegation trouble before he was sacked the following April.

He also fell out with a host of key names at Valencia as he tried to force star players such as Santiago Canizares out of the Mestalla.

Koeman said: “You can’t compare Valencia with Everton or Southampton or Benfica or PSV because that was really difficult and it was a revolution with a new stadium that was not built and still isn’t finished I believe.

“That was the wrong club at the wrong time. But even when it is a negative period, it is a learning point. That is OK and no problem now.

“It was a bad experience but even a bad experience can be good for the future.

“The most important thing, and this is for every manager in my opinion, is the connection with the players.

“If you feel you still have that good connection with the players and you think they are committed then that is the key point.

“The rest is all about decisions that don’t belong to the manager.

“I don’t have any reason to doubt my connection with the players at Everton. They are old enough and experienced enough and you get that feeling: Yes or no?”

At Goodison Park today, Bournemouth winger Junior Stanislas is set to be handed the chance to continue his goal spree.

Stanislas has scored four times in seven meetings with the Merseysiders, including a 1-0 victory at the Vitality Stadium last season.

The former West Ham youngster made his comeback in Tuesday’s 1-0 Carabao Cup triumph over Brighton from the groin injury which had ruled him out of the start of the season.

Manager Eddie Howe said: “He’s a huge player for our squad. He has great creativity, pace and a good work ethic and we’ve missed him since he’s been out injured.

“He probably went under the radar a bit how he played for us last season; the amount of goals he scored and the amount of assists. He is a big player for us.

“We felt we’d missed him, so it’s great to see him back on the pitch. We managed his game time against Brighton and you’re always tempted to bring good players back to let’s wait and see.

“A number of players on Tuesday did their chances no harm in featuring.”
