EARTHQUAKE FEARS: One of most DANGEROUS volcanos in US hit by scores of huge tremors

Some two dozen earthquakes have hit Washington State’s Mt Rainier since September 11.

All of the earthquakes have been relatively small, with the largest being a magnitude 1.6 tremor.

It comes after more than 200 people were killed in Mexico’s latest earthquake.

Despite the earthquake swarm, experts insist there is no need to panic yet as Mt Rainier does not look like it is about to erupt.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) says that swarms like this are relatively common around the volcano and are not typically indicators that an eruption is imminent.

A statement on the USGS’s website read: “Swarms are a common and expectable occurrence at active volcanoes such as Mount Rainier.

“While interesting, most never result in surface changes.

“The most likely scenario for the current swarm is that elevated earthquake rates will continue for a few days before slowly decaying to background rates of seismicity.”

In a typical week, Mt Rainier is usually subjected to around two earthquakes – so the seismic activity at the moment is high.

However, there was a similar swarm in 2015 and 2016, with no eruption, and in 2009 there were more than 1,000 small earthquakes over a three day period from September 20 to 23.

At 4,392 metres tall, Mt Rainier is one of the tallest in the United States.

Despite the last eruption taking place between November and December 1894, experts still consider it to have the potential to be one of the most powerful volcanos in the US.

According to Geology.com: “Research shows that Mount Rainier is one of our Nation’s most dangerous volcanoes.

“It has been the source of countless eruptions and volcanic mudflows (lahars) that have surged down valleys on its flanks and buried broad areas now densely populated.”
