Man Utd Burton: Jose Mourinho heaps praise on Anthony Martial – he did amazingly well

Manchester United comfortably beat Burton Albion 4-1 in the Carabao Cup last night to advance to the fourth round. 

Marcus Rashford scored a brace with Jesse Lingard and Martial weighing in with goals at Old Trafford.  

Lloyd Dyer netted in added time, but his effort proved to be merely a consolation as Nigel Clough’s side bowed out. 

This was only Martial’s third start of the season in all competitions for , but he scored and provided an assist for Rashford in an encouraging display. 

And was quick to heap praise on the France international for his performance against

Mourinho said: “Anthony Martial wanted to do things – some he did amazingly well, others not so well but he was always trying and that commitment and happiness on the pitch is always important.”

United are the current holders of the cup competition with Mourinho looking to make it a record five League Cup wins in his managerial career. 

But he cast doubt on whether the tournament is needed as he reckons English football could survive without it. 

“If the competition is an official competition then it is important for Manchester United and for me as a manager,” Mourinho added. 

“If you ask me could the English football survive or even be better without this competition? Maybe, maybe we would be fresher for European competition for example. 

“But we have this competition, we have to respect the sponsors, we have to respect the opponents and a lot of us are trying to do our best.”

United take on Swansea at the Liberty Stadium in the next round of the competition on the week commencing October 23.
