The former middleweight champion of the world was a legend of the ring, known for his long standing rivalry with Sugar Ray Robinson.
His life and career was immortalised in Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-winning 1980 biopic Raging Bull, with Robert De Niro portraying LaMotta.
His death was announced on Facebook by his daughter Christi, who posted a short message reading: “Jake LaMotta July 10 1922-September 19 2017 – Rest in Peace Pop”.
He died at a nursing home due to complications with pneumonia, TMZ reported.
