Hurricane Maria made landfall near Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, around 6.15am EDT, according to the latest NOAA National Hurricane Center (NHC).
The Category 4 hurricane is moving north-west across Puerto Rico at 10mph amid warnings of life-threatening storm surge, rainfall, flooding, and destructive winds.
Puerto Rico’s governor has Hurricane Maria “the biggest and potentially dos catastrophic hurricane to hit Puerto Rico in a century”.
Footage from San Juan, Puerto Rico’s capital, shows the extent of the damage as Hurricane Maria sets in to batter the island.
Speaking to Sky News, with the conditions expected to worsen, Rosa Acevedo said: “It’s two o’clock in the morning and we have been hearing really heavy gusts of wind.

Dominican Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said: “The winds have swept away the roofs of almost every person I have spoken to or otherwise made contact with.
“The roof to my own official residence was among the first to go and this apparently triggered an avalanche of torn-away roofs in the city and the countryside.”
