Mother! defended as ‘very audacious and brave’ by Paramount after AWFUL audience reactions

The controversial new horror may have won over most critics, but it’s failed to capture the imaginations of the cinema-going public.

, making just $8 million at the US box office  and receiving a CinemaScore of F, a very rare grade.

Now Paramount Pictures, who funded the movie, have released a statement defending the new movie.

Megan Colligan, Worldwide President of Marketing and Distribution said: “This movie is very audacious and brave.”

She added: “You are talking about a director [Darren Aronofsky] at the top of his game, and an actress at the top her game.

“They made a movie that was intended to be bold.

“Everyone wants original filmmaking, and everyone celebrates Netflix when they tell a story no one else wants to tell. This is our version.

“We don’t want all movies to be safe. And it’s okay if some people don’t like it.”

In comparison, fellow horror IT, took $123 million in its opening weekend last week.

But this weekend Mother! was pushed to third, while IT took another $60 million, remaining at the top spot.
