The US President, during a phone call on Monday, discussed “maximising pressure on North Korea through vigorous enforcement” of UN measures with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The White House claimed Beijing – North Korea’s main ally – had agreed with Washington, committing to maintaining pressure on North Korea to stop its missile programme.

Newt Gingrich, a former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, told Fox News North Korean tension could cause World War 3 if China refuses to entirely “cut off” its ally.

He said: “The Chinese, in particular, have got to cut them off.

“There are all sorts of games being played, there are a lot of ways that the North Korean economy continues to be financed by Russia and China, and I think those two countries have to understand they are risking a real war on their border if they allow this to continue.

“The United States is not going to tolerate a dictatorship with ICBMs, with hydrogen warheads that could eliminate American cities.

“No President could responsibly take the risk of someone like Kim Jong-un literally wiping out Seattle, Chicago or Los Angeles.

“If the Chinese and Russians don’t want the danger of a pre-emptive war on their border, they had better get together and coerce the North Koreans to agreeing to stand down on their programmes.”

Russia and China have begun a dramatic military drill less than 100 miles from the North Korean border, amid fears that World War 3 could be started by Kim Jong-un’s actions.

Impressive video footage, released by the Russian military, shows Chinese vessels and personnel arrive in the Port of Vladivostok, in Russia, for the joint naval exercise.

The drills will extend into the Sea of Okhotsk, north of Japan, and will run until September 26, as each side carry out joint submarine rescue and anti-submarine drills involving multiple ships and aircraft.

Military sources told Russian news agency Tass the drills were not aimed at anyone country, adding they hoped to “consolidate partnership and practical cooperation between the two militaries”.
