Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho makes first start of the season but Reds draw with Burnley

The Brazilian playmaker was one of the summer’s big transfer story but Liverpool remained insistent that he would not be leaving Merseyside for La Liga.

A back injury kept Coutinho out of Liverpool’s early games but he came off the bench against Sevilla in the Champions League last Wednesday and started in the 1-1 draw against Burnley on Saturday.

Coutinho worked hard but had a quiet match and then confirmed that he does not think he will not be joining Barcelona any time soon.

He said: “Not that I know of.

“What happened was a job offer and, in life, sometimes you get interested – sometimes you don’t – and in my case, everyone knows that I got interested, my family too.

“As I have always said, it is a great offer to receive an offer from such a great club like that but it is also a great honour being here.

Liverpool is a great club worldwide. I’m here and I will give my best as always.

“It was a complicated month for me but as I have said, it is an honour to receive that offer but it is also an honour to wear this shirt, so what I can do is work hard and honour that on the field. It is all cool.

“I’m working hard, my thoughts are on the team’s goals, making a good season, with the national team too, doing my best to get there.”

Sean Dyche was happy with his side’s back-to-basics tactics as Burnley’s wonderful away form took another surprising twist.

It took Burnley until a win at Crystal Palace in late April to reach five points away from home last season but this year is looking a whole lot happier and healthier on the road. They have won at Chelsea and drawn at Tottenham.

The Clarets were good value for a point against a Liverpool side again crippled by some woeful defending and Dyche was unapologetic for the manner his team went about their long-ball business.

He said: “We deliberately got the ball and got it as far down their throats as we could because we felt it would be effective.

“Glenn Hoddle wouldn’t have played in modern football because people would say ‘Glenn you can only pass it 10-yards mate, you are not allowed to play long balls’.

“What I am saying is don’t be afraid to play a long pass. These players here, even our players, they are Premier League players and if you honestly think they can’t land a ball 40-yards onto somebody’s chest, they can. So why would I take away the ability to do that?

“We are moving forward and that is important, we think we are a slightly better version of last year, there are still no guarantees.

“Every season at the moment is very, very tough for us but we keep nudging it forward that is what we have to do.”
