It looked almost certain that Golovkin was going to be awarded the fight and retain his WBC, WBA and IBF middleweight titles in style as well as his unbeaten record.
However, the contest was controversially awarded a draw with judge Adelaide Byrd bizarrely awarding it 118-110 in favour of Canelo.
This result was met by a chorus of boos by the fans in the T-Mobile Arena.
It was a fight that lived up to the billing, but ended in an anti-climactic decision.
And Golovkin has moved to criticise the Mexican counter-puncher for his fighting style.

“He has good experience. I want a true fight,” Golovkin said.
“I like Mexican style but I want a true fight. Close distance, big drama show.
“I didn’t get that so much tonight.
“It’s not my fault. I put pressure on every round. I want drama show. I want to give everyone a big present. It’s not my problem.
“I come back to Kazakhstan and say thanks to those who support me.”
He also expressed his desire to have a rematch to decide who is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the division.
“Of course I want a rematch,” Golovkin said.
“I want a fight. Rematch or next fight, I want a champion’s fight. I’ve got my belts, I want a true fight.
“I have a couple of ideas. He moved too much.”
