The appointment comes following the departure of Colin Trevorrow last week amid reports of a “difficult” relationship with LucasFilm bosses.
Now, it has been claimed that Abrams was not the first man to be offered the gig.
Per previous speculation, it seems Rian Johnson – the man behind Episode 8: The Last Jedi (out this Christmas) – had been approached.
Deadline reported in the moments leading up to Abrams being officially announced that the film-maker, who also made Looper, “decided not to take the offer”.
He had alluded to the fact earlier this week, during a fan event for The Last Jedi in Japan.

“It was never in the plan for me to direct Episode 9, so I don’t know what’s going to happen with it,” he said.
“But for me I was entirely focussed on Episode 8 and having this experience and now I’m just thinking about putting the movie out there and seeing how audiences respond to it.”
He went on: “So no, I’m not thinking about it right now.
“Whoever does it, I’m going to be really excited to be an audience member again and see what the next film-maker has to show us and where this story ends up going.”
Episode 9’s release date has been pushed back to December 20, 2019.
Meanwhile Star Wars Episode 8: The Last Jedi is out in just a few months’ time, on December 14 in the UK.
