REVEALED: Inside the North Korea embassy in Russia

People have seen the imposing, stark, grey, concrete exterior of the embassy but these photos offer a glimpse inside the structure for the very first time.

The images show a grand, if dated, interior with wooden panels on the walls, and portraits honouring Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il – leader Kim Jong-un’s father and grandfather.

It is a far cry from the labour camps and torture chambers run by Kim Jong-un’s regime in North Korea. Human rights abuses in the camps are “without parallel in the contemporary world,” according to a UN report.

But it appears life for Kim’s diplomats and ambassador in Russia Kim Yong Jae is a much more sophisticated affair in the regime’s Moscow embassy in Mosfilmovskaya Street in the Ramenki district of Moscow.

Decorated ornately with a garish green patterned carpet and damask wallpaper the embassy also boasts a set of floral curtains.

One picture shows an official sitting on an armchair behind an orange mahogany table with portraits honouring North Korea’s leaders behind him.

Two rose bushes and a grand floral arrangement also sit behind the desk.

Some women are pictured wearing colourful, traditional North Korean dresses as they stand by a table laden with wine, beer, juice and Coke.

It appears officials at the embassy in Moscow are keen on the fizzy drink which is not sold in North Korea because of international sanctions.

One photo shows staff looking at a portrait of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il surveying the North Korean landscape.

Another shows the men bowing in front of the portrait – both are revered in the secretive nation.

The final photo shows a dinner party. Many people are standing behind a table covered in plates of food.

North Korea’s Moscow embassy stands in stark contrast to its London branch.

Pyongyang’s embassy in the British capital is tucked away in the London suburb of Ealing with North Koran diploamts living in the £1.3million semi-detached home.

The pictures come after it emerged Russian President Vladimir Putin was secretly smuggling supplies to North Korea, according to US officials.

The UN imposed an international ban on trade and energy supplies to the secretive kingdom as punishment for its nuclear missile programme.

But sources told the Daily Star that Russia has been smuggling oil to Pyongyang with an illicit ferry trade route.

US President Donald Trump pressured China to cut off its reclusive ally, but Russia’s smuggling is undercutting the international efforts to stop Kim developing nuclear weapons amid escalating tensions and the fear of World War 3.

Mr Putin has spoken out against the sanctions on North Korea as the Kremlin fears the fall of North Korea Could bring US troops to the Russian border.

He said: “Ramping up military hysteria in such conditions is senseless, it’s a dead end. It could lead to a global catastrophe and a huge loss of human life.

“There is no other way to solve the North Korean nuclear issue, save that of peaceful dialogue.”

Just last week South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in warned Mr Putin’s relationship with North Korea could become unpredictable if “provocative” missile testing does not stop.
