Despite being tipped for success, it’s safe to say that Andy Muschietti’s efforts have exceeded all expectations – making it the biggest September opening of all time.
That’s bad news for Bridget Jones’s Baby, which previously broke the record last year (£8.11 million, $10.7 million).
The film absolutely trounced its competition: American Made came in second with £671,750, while Dunkirk continued its long-running stay with another £626,000 – bringing its domestic total to £55 million.

The sequel to It is expected in 2019.
