First it was the director, then it was the writer and now the release date has changed on the final film in the sequel trilogy.
Star Wars Episode IX was set for release on June 21, 2019, but has now been pushed back to December 20, 2019.
The announcement was made on the official Star Wars Twitter feed following news earlier today that about its replacement director.
The move is understandable seeing as The Force Awakens director Abrams has just replaced Colin Trevorrow, who is rumoured to have had creative differences over the script.
Abrams will be co-writing with Chris Terrio, who won an Oscar for Argo and also penned Justice League and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
If anything the push back shouldn’t feel like a delay, since there has already been a two year gap between 2015’s The Force Awakens and 2017’s The Last Jedi – the latter of which will be released in December.
Interestingly the Han Solo movie is still set for release in May 2018, despite having seen its directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord replaced by Ron Howard – again over creative differences.
Perhaps the reason is the spin-off had completed most of the filming, while Star Wars Episode IX is still in the script stage.
Just what Trevorrow and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy disagreed over is still unknown.
Star Wars Episode IX will be released on December 20, 2019.
