Anthony Joshua will face Kubrat Pulev to defend his IBF and WBA heavyweight titles

Joshua is unbeaten in his 19-fight professional career with every single win coming by knockout and is now the IBF and WBA heavyweight champion.

But the former Olympic champion believes he is constantly improving and that Pulev should not think he knows what to expect.

“As soon as the [Klitschko] fight was over, the question was “when’s next?” and we’ve got a date set now,” Joshua said at a press conference at the Principality Stadium, where he will face Pulev in six weeks’ time.

“I’m looking forward to expressing a kind of a different approach to my boxing skill because that was a new experience that I went through in my last fight.

“Now I can show what I learned from that.”

Klitschko, who did not activate the rematch clause with Joshua and instead retired last month, was the first man to knock the Brit down in what was seen as a coming-of-age bout as he got up off the canvas to win by knockout.

Now the 27-year-old is the world’s leading heavyweight and has set about unifying the division with WBC holder Deontay Wilder and WBO champ Joseph Parker both in his sights.

And with few now able to match Joshua in the ring, he appears to be less interested in his opponents and more in the approval of his elders.

“I’m starting to understand that when people come to fight me, even if they put up a good account and they lay down, they’ll still get a pat on the back and told they’ve done well,” Joshua added.

“So I have to be prepared for the toughest of challenges moving forward.

“This fight isn’t a statement to anyone. It’s just me showing my coach that I’m listening to his instructions.

“As long as the old-time fighters are appreciating what I’m doing and my coach is appreciating what I’m doing, I’m happy.”

In Pulev, he faces an experienced heavyweight with only one defeat in his 26-bout record.

Anthony Joshua beat Wladimir Klitschko in a thrilling title fight

That solitary loss came against Klitschko three years ago in a title fight that saw the Bulgarian overwhelmed at times by this opponent’s powerful left hook.

But the 36-year-old said he watched Joshua’s own clash with the Ukrainian and believes it could easily have gone the other way.

“They were equally matched,” Pulev said.

“The chances were 50:50.

“Anyone could have won that fight – AJ or Klitschko.”

The fight, held in front of a record crowd of 90,000 at Wembley Stadium, will live long in the memory as both fighters were knocked down before Klitschko was stopped on his feet in the 11th round.

And while Joshua says he is ready for another slug-fest, he also wants to showcase the slick boxing skills that won him super-heavyweight gold as an amateur at the London 2012 Olympics.

“It’s about finesse. It’s about outclassing your opponent,” Joshua said.

“If I need to go to war, I’ll go to war. But I could do it with ease as well.

“We’ll fight the fight the fighter brings to the table. Sometimes I can go and be smart and wise; I can take an opponent out without taking too much punishment.

“But sometimes you have to go to the trenches and that’s something that can’t be taught. That’s part of character.

“We’ve showed that we’ve got that in abundance.

“I just look for the win one way or another.”
