North Korea vows ‘POWERFUL countermeasures’ as long-range missile launch ‘due TOMORROW’

It follows the test launch of a hydrogen bomb by North Korea last week which sparked a 6.3 artificial earthquake in the region

The rogue state later announced the deadly nuclear bomb could be loaded onto an ICBM – which had been test launched twice in July.

The US wants the UN Security Council (UNSC) to impose several sanctions on the despot nation including an oil embargo, a ban on the country’s exports of textiles and the hiring of North Korean labourers abroad.

But North Korea has threatened to hit back with “countermeasures” if the UNSC approves the sanctions.

A statement from North Korea said: ”We will respond to the barbaric plotting around sanctions and pressure by the United States with powerful counter measures of our own.”

It comes as the South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon warned that North Korea could be planning to launch a missile on September 9.

Speaking to a meeting of the nation’s defence ministers, Mr Lee said: ”The situation is very grave. It doesn’t seem much time is left before North Korea achieves its complete nuclear armament.

“Some believe North Korea may launch another intercontinental ballistic missile on the 9th – this time at an ordinary angle.

“A special measure is urgently needed to stop their recklessness.”

Last Saturday North Korea released photos of Kim Jong-un supervising a hydrogen bomb being loaded into an ICBM after announcing it had developed a more advanced nuclear weapon that has “great destructive power”.

Following the provocative launch Donald Trump told Theresa May during a phone call on Wednesday “now is not the time to talk to North Korea” amid fears of military action may be taken.

In a statement, the White House said: “They agreed that this latest reckless act only strengthens the world’s determination to confront the growing North Korea threat.

“President Trump reiterated that now is not the time to talk to North Korea, and made clear that all options remain open to defend the United States and its allies against North Korean aggression.

“The two leaders resolved to continue working closely together on increasing diplomatic and economic pressure on North Korea, and to call on others to do the same.”

Speaking on Thursday President Trump added: “Military action would certainly be an option. Is it inevitable? Nothing is inevitable.

“I would prefer not going the route of the military. If we do use it on North Korea, it will be a very sad day for North Korea.”

The US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, has said she wants the 15-member UNSC to vote on sanctions on Monday.

The Trump administration also wants the UNSC to subject Kim Jong-un to an asset freeze and travel ban, according to a draft resolution seen by Reuters.

A UN resolution needs nine votes in favour and no vetoes by the US, Britain, France, Russia or China to pass.

China, North Korea main ally, agreed that the UN Security Council should take more action against Pyongyang while Russia has warned more sanction could prove dangerous.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said: “Given the new developments on the Korean peninsula, China agrees that the UN Security Council should make a further response and take necessary measures.”

But a diplomat speaking on condition of anonymity said: “Russia and China are not on board with the content of the resolution.”
