North Korea anniversary missile could be brought down by geomagnetic solar storm

While missiles are kitted out with high-tech equipment and are heavily shielded against radiation, the storm may force the despot to think again.

Any missile fired during the storm may be interfered with, meaning the loss previous data or ancillary equipment.

Previously Kim Jong-un has boasted how far and how high his missiles have travelled, a revelry which he could be robbed of if they lose track of their ballistics.

Lance Gatling, an aerospace consultant with Nexial Research in Tokyo, said this was a very likely scenario.

But he added, in contrast to their usual position, the US and Japan may wish to see a missile fired on this occasion – so they can test their tracking equipment in a storm.

Despite their reservations, South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon said they would be watching on Saturday for a missile launch.

Pyongyang has pushed tensions to the limit after it fired a missile over Japan’s northern island last month and then tested a hyrdrogen bomb.

Tensions were at breaking point after the tyrant pushed the button, sending a missile capable of carrying a nuclear payload over its neighbour.

The missile fired is thought to be the new intermediate-range Hwasong-12, which flew over Hokkaido before landing some 733 miles east of Japan’s coast, in the Pacific.

It broke into three parts and landed in the sea after reaching heights of 341 miles and travelling a total distance of 1.700 miles, according to Seoul’s joint chiefs of staff (JCS).

Japan’s J-Alert warning system immediately sprung into action with automated messages telling people to seek shelter.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called the launch an “unprecedented and grave threat”.

Kim Jong-un has been engaged in a war of words with the US, repeatedly threatening to obliterate North Korea’s enemies including the West and Donald Trump.

A statement from North Korea said: ”We will respond to the barbaric plotting around sanctions and pressure by the United States with powerful counter measures of our own.”
