Mexico earthquake tsunami WARNING: video shows waters receding sparking surge panic

Video footage from the Mexican region of Chiapas appears to show sea water receding, which can often precede a tsunami, as the country remains at high alert after the 8.1 magnitude earthquake

The video shared by news service Alerta Chiapas purports to show waters receding. This comes after a warning were issued for Mexico and many other Latin American countries on the Pacific coast.

A voice on the idea can be heard saying: “I don’t want to scare you but the water is receding. The water is receding, please be careful everyone.”

The International Tsunami Centre warns: “An approaching tsunamis is sometimes preceded by a noticeable rise or fall of coastal water.”

“This is a natural warning; people should move inland away from the shoreline.”

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre warned widespread, hazardous tsunami waves were possible as coastal communities braces for a potential surge

A tsunami warning has been issued after the quake hit near Chiapas, a region in southern Mexico along the Middle America Trench, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

Meanwhile, buildings shook in the capital, Mexico City, with the tremors also felt in neighbouring Guatemala.

In Mexico City, one of the biggest capitals in the world, people ran into the streets in their pyjamas after the quake struck just before midnight.

Mexico’s civil protection agency said it was the strongest earthquake to hit the country since a devastating 1985 tremor that toppled buildings and killed thousands.

The news comes as at least 14 people have been killed by Hurricane Irma in the Gulf of Mexico.

At 11pm EDT the National Hurricane Center announced additional Hurricane and Storm Surge Warnings for Florida and the Florida Keys, upgrading from an initial public advisory at 8pm EDT.

Mexico was struck by a catastrophic earth quake in 1985 that decimated much of the capital city killing thousands.
