Hurricane Irma LIVE: 5pm update from the National Hurricane Center – NOAA latest path

A hurricane watch is currently in effect in in parts of Cuba and north of the island of Anna Maria and the Sebastien Inlet, according to the latest update from the NOAA National Hurricane Center (NHC). 

The 5pm EDT update said Hurricane and Storm Surge Watches are also now in Tampa, Florida and the Florida Keys. 

The update by the National Hurricane Center said: “The Hurricane Warning has been extended northward for east coast of Florida to Sebastian Inlet, and along the west coast of the peninsula northward to Anna Maria Island.

“The Hurricane Watch has been extended northward along the west coast of Florida to Suwannee River.

“A Storm Surge Watch has been issued north of Venice to the Anclote River, including Tampa Bay, and from Ponce Inlet to the Flagler/ Volusia County Line.”

NHC update: The latest location

Hurricane Jose was last located on the edge of Cuba and the Western Bahamas. 

NHC said: “Hurricane conditions are spreading westward over portions of Cuba and the central Bahamas. 

“Hurricane warnings extended northward along the Florida peninsula.”

NHC update: Latest Wind speed 

Maximum sustained winds are now at 155mph. 

NHC said: “Maximum sustained winds are near 155 mph (250 km/h) with higher gusts. 

“Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles (110 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 185 miles (295 km).”

NHC update: The threat to the Caribbean 

The NHC said storm surges, wind and rainfall were all risking lives.

The alert said: “The combination of a dangerous storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline.

“The combination of a life-threatening storm surge and large breaking waves will raise water levels above normal tide levels.

“In all areas this rainfall may cause life-threatening flash floods and, in some areas, mudslides.

“A few tornadoes will be possible beginning Saturday morning across south Florida.”
