Hurricane Irma: British troops arrive in devastated Caribbean as looters storm apartments

has destroyed a number of islands in the region with some desperate civilians scavenging in wrecked shops or even storming private apartments in a hunt for food and water.

Netherlands PM Mark Rutte has deployed troops to the Dutch side of St Martin after witnesses described desperate groups “with machetes” hunting for supplies.

British troops have arrived at the UK territory of Anguilla to deliver six tonnes of aid to the hurricane-hit island.

A British Army Royal Logistics Corps Mexeflote landing raft has been used to move vehicles and an electrical generator from RFA Mounts Bay to Sandy Bay village earlier today.

After delivering equipment to Anguilla the British Navy will move onto the British Virgin Islands, which has also been badly damaged by Hurricane Irma.

Martin Lucas, originally from Cornwall but now working and living on the island, said: “We’ve now got a breakdown in law and order. People with machetes are breaking into shops and apartments taking what they need. It is a very violent and dangerous place.

“People are very scared. I have hardly slept and I have run out of words to describe what is happening.

“We are trying to survive. It is the worst experience. You cannot comprehend what it feels like.

“The windows were torn out like paper and cars were flying through the air. Cars were on fire and fires were breaking out all over the place.

“Hollywood could not recreate this. Everything has gone. Nobody is safe right now.”
