Are YOU having enough sex? Scientists claim to know what is a normal amount

A study from the Kinsey Institute for research in Sex, Reproduction and Gender suggests there is one key variable which predicts how often people have sex.

This is age, with different stages in life indicating different levels of sexual activity.

People between the ages of 18-29 have the most sex, with an average of 112 sessions per year.

This works out to twice a week on average.

The numbers drop down for 30-39 year-olds, who only manage to have sex an average of 86 times a year, or 1.6 times a week.

This could be because the thirties are traditionally the age people have children.

But the numbers don’t improve much for those in their forties.

The 40-49 age group only manage to have sex 69 times per year.

Marriage was a key indicator of frequency of sexual activity, as 34 per cent of married couples have sex two to three times a week.
45 per cent have sex a few times a month while 13 per cent only have sex a few times a year.

Interestingly, those who had sex four or more times a week did not report feeling any happier than those who only had sex once a week.

Writing about the results of the research, Dr. Justin Lehmiller said: “The basic storyline that has emerged from these studies is that, as we get older, our odds of developing chronic health conditions increases.

“This, in turn, negatively impacts the frequency and quality of sexual activity.”

The research into the frequency of love-making comes after it was revealed men with a particular penis size are more likely to give a woman orgasms.

The research, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, has found that women who prefer longer penises are more likely to have vaginal orgasms, but not clitoral orgasms.

Publishing the findings, researchers wrote: “Research indicates that women’s orgasm during penile–vaginal intercourse is influenced by fitness-related male partner characteristics, penis size is important for many women, and preference for a longer penis is associated with greater vaginal orgasm consistency.”

These orgasms were triggered “without concurrent clitoral masturbation”.
