In a repeat of the 2009 US Open final, Del Potro will be hoping to upset the odds once again when he takes on Federer who has returned to his best form this year.
The Swiss maestro has won both Grand Slams he has competed in this year – Wimbledon and the Australian Open.
Del Potro meanwhile has only even reached the last four of a Grand Slam on three occasions throughout his career and hasn’t done so since Wimbledon in 2013.
But it promises to be a thrilling encounter. Rafael Nadal awaits the winner. Will Federer face the Spaniard for the first time at Flushing Meadows? 2:50am: There was only one deuce in the entirety of the first set but we already have two in the opening two games of the second. Federer gets his first break point opportunity of the match but a weak return from Del Potro’s serve enabled to Argentine to smash a forehand winner across the angle.

And in the end Delpo’s serve comes good to keep the set level. But Federer will be boosted by his first opportunity to break serve.
2:45am: Federer looks a bit stunned from that quicker break in the first set from Del Potro and he hasn’t started well in the second.
The crowd gasped as Federer dropped a backhand into the net and Del Potro was able force deuce but the former’s first serve got him out of trouble to hold his serve.

2:40am: And the Argentine section of the crowd break into song as their hero holds serve to take the first set.
And it was only fitting that he took the set with a crushing 129mph winner to draw first blood.

2:35am: What a game from Del Potro! A crushing forehand down towards the baseline from Delpo was met with looks of disbelief to make it 30-30 and he made no mistake of having the first break point of the match.
Federer looked to serve and volley but Del Potro read it well and raced across the baseline to return with an incredible forehand winner past the outstretched racked of the Swiss star.
2:32am: And just like that Del Potro has the first 40-0 service game of the match with an incredible display of power. Federer doesn’t want anything to do with his 120mph+ serves and I don’t blame him!

2:30am: Del Potro has been down in his last two service games but has come back to hold. Federer giving him opportunities to remain in the set with a couple of unforced errors.
Neither player has even had a break point but Delpo will serve to stay in this opening set.

2:20am: Nothing separating these two so far in the opening set. Del Potro’s serve is already up to speed at 128mph and Federer looks as cool as ever with his one-handed backhand and elegance across the baseline. Going to make a bold prediction that this won’t be over in record time. Nadal will have to wait patiently to find out his opponent.

2:05am: No break of serve as of yet with both players testing each other with their strengths.
Federer testing Delpo’s footwork with a couple of deft drop shots while the Argentine has already caused his opponent problems with his ferocious forehand.
A promising start for what’s to come.
1:50am: ‘Gorgeous’, ‘stunning’ and plenty of oo’s and aah’s from the crowd as the match gets underway with Federer taking the opening game on his serve.
1:45am: Both players are out on the court with a sell-out crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium slowly making their way to their seats in anticipation of the night’s main event.
1:30am: We’re not far away from the final quarter-final of the men’s draw with Madison Keys breezing into the semi-finals after beating Kaia Kanepi 6-3, 6-3 in just over an hour and what a match it should be. Federer will want to avenge his 2009 final defeat while Del Potro has nothing to lose but everything to gain.
The possibility of a Nadal v Federer match in the next round excites every tennis fan at Flushing Meadows but Del Potro will be out to spoil the party and after his stunning comeback against Dominic Thiem in the last round then why not?
