Hurricane Irma: 88F tropical waters are fuelling Irma to make it EVER SCARIER for Florida

Water temperatures have reached 88F (31C) south of Florida and north of Cuba, which will give strength to the devastating .

Meteorologists state that hurricanes need to travel through waters of at least 80F to sustain themselves.

However, every single degree warmer than 80F can make a noticeable difference to the strength of the hurricane, so 8F warmer will make Hurricane Irma one of the strongest on record.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is expecting gusts of up to 190 MPH by the time it hits Florida on Sunday, September 10, which has the potential to devastate the state.

However, it will likely be Cuba and the Bahamas that bare the full force of Hurricane Irma as hurricanes do tend to weaken as they travel over land.

But meteorologist Mark Torregrosa says there is not enough land to protect Florida from the almighty storm.

Mr Torregrosa writes for MLive: “The amount of land Irma is going to travel over before coming near Florida won’t be enough to substantially weaken Irma.”

In anticipation of the arrival of Hurricane Irma, authorities in Florida have begun evacuation procedures after declaring a state of emergency.

Officials urged people to leave any areas that could be directly hit from Irma.

Florida Governor Rick Scott said Donald Trump has “offered the full resources” of the federal government as Floridians prepare for the arrival of Hurricane Irma.

Mr Scott said: “Hurricane Irma is a major and life-threatening storm and Florida must be prepared.”

The NHC has also issued warnings for more than a dozen Caribbean islands including the northern Leeward Islands, the US and British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
