Angela Merkel booed at rally days after she was pelted with tomatoes

“People in other countries would be delighted if they could demonstrate in this way,” said Mrs Merkel said, as more than 100 far-right protests tried to drown out her speech at a general election campaign rally in Torgau.

“That’s why we should be happy that we have democracy in Germany and that we can vote freely. Other people can only dream of that,” she added over a crescendo of boos, whistling and jeers.

Then, addressing her supporters, she said “you can feel it here on this market square that it rests on you to go and vote on September 24.”

Mrs Merkel is tipped to win a fourth term in office in the vote but the level of animosity against her due to the refugee crisis continues to rise.

Her CDU Conservative party has bled supporters to the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AFD) which is predicted to be sending MPs into the national parliament in Berlin for the first time in the election. It is already represented in state assemblies.

Some 3,000 people were at the rally and those who demonstrated against her were angry at her refugee policies which have seen over a million immigrants enter the country in the last two years.

Mrs Merkel has never conceded that her decision to open Germany up to hundreds of thousands of inverted refugees was anything but the right one.

Torgau is in the east of a Germany, the former communist state where neo-Nazism is rife and refugees have suffered the most in vigilante attacks.
