iPhone 8 release date – THIS is the best time to sell your old phone ahead of new launch

Apple is tipped to unveil three new smartphone models on September 12th – two iterative updates to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, as well as an all-new handset to mark the 10th anniversary of the iPhone range.

This all-new premium iPhone – believed to be named iPhone 8, iPhone Edition or iPhone Pro – will ship with a dramatic new industrial design and feature-set.

Selling an old device can be a great way to make the latest and greatest gadget seem a little more affordable.

But those looking to sell their old iPhone to help with the cost of the so-called iPhone 8 will need to get their skates on.

Compare and Recycle has trawled through the offer prices from over 30 recyclers to determine the best time to part with your older iPhone.

The data revealed that the best time to sell is August.

The comparison site says, “The month before iPhone 7 came out, the demand from the recyclers is high enough to drive recycling prices up.

“Many people like to hold onto their device in August to trade in for the new model in September so Merchants offer a higher price in August to keep their stock levels high.”

Realistically, most people don’t want to part with their smartphone a full calendar month before the new iPhone hits UK shelves.

Compare and Recycle looked at the best times in September to upgrade and found a sharp decrease in resale value after the iPhone announcement was made.

It writes, “The announcement was made on the 7th of September 2016 resulted in a sharp decrease in offer price. This coincides with the volume of people selling through the website, indicated by the green bars.

“Immediately after the announcement the price enters its most volatile period with the most sudden drop off, affecting the smallest capacity iPhone 6S the most.

“This volatility lasted all the way until the release of the iPhone 7, the prices were then met with a steady resale price for several days before it hits a more consistently slow fall in price for the months following.

“The ten days between announcement and release can mean the difference of up £50 if you have the latest iPhone, so deciding quickly is the best course of action to ensure the biggest payout.”

Apple is widely-tipped to jettison the iconic Home Button on its new iPhone, allowing the high-resolution display to bleed to the very edges of the device.

The Cupertino-based company looks set to incorporate the functionality built into the Home Button into 3D Touch gestures.

It is not yet known how Apple will replicate the Touch ID fingerprint scanner technology previous embedded into the physical button, with some reports suggesting Apple will incorporate the feature into the glass display, while others believe the sensor will be relocated to the back of the phone.

Renown pundit Mark Gurman, who is typically reliable when it comes to details on unannounced Apple products, believes Touch ID will be dropped completely in favour of face-scanning.

According to his sources, the face scanning technology will be used to log-in, authenticate contactless payments and open secure iOS apps.

iPhone 8 will use a new 3D sensor on the front of the device to scan users’ faces.

According to those working on the new technology, the sensor is capable of scanning a user’s face and unlocking the iPhone in a few hundred milliseconds.

It is designed to work even when the smartphone is placed on a table, rather than held up close to the face, it has been reported.

The sensor records more individual data points than a fingerprint scanner, which in theory, makes it more secure than Touch ID.

The 3D face scanning camera will be housed on the front of the iPhone in a small notch at the top of the edge-to-edge display.

Elsewhere, iPhone 8 looks set to include OIS, Optical Image Stabilisation, for both lens used in the rear dual-camera set-up.

It is also expected to ship with an OLED display with True Tone, a technology that Apple debuted with its 9.7inch iPad Pro.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus are expected to swap an aluminium case for glass to enable wireless charging.
