A select few pals of director Darren Aronofsky have passed their verdict on social media after a private screening last week.
Their word is that the film will be the most controversial Hollywood has seen since A Clockwork Orange.
Anthony Bourdain tweeted: “Just saw Aronofsky’s MOTHER. It is dark, dark, dark, brilliant and will upset the f**k out of people. A good poke in eye to convention.”
Mylo Carbia, meanwhile, shared a grab of a Facebook post; calling the epic a “life-changing experience”.
“It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before,” she added. “It’s crazy, gorgeous, violent, powerful…
“And it will be the most controversial movie since A Clockwork Orange, sure to be studied in film schools for decades to come.”
Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer star alongside Lawrence, with a trailer last month also leaving viewers spooked.
The film sees Lawrence and Bardem as a couple who are surprised when another couple (Pfeiffer and Harris) comes to stay with them – and everything rapidly heads downhill.
Aronofsky has form with disturbing thrillers.
The 48-year-old’s CV also boasts Noah, another hugely controversial release; and the incredibly dark Black Swan.
Mother! is out on September 15.
